Color Of Change Commends IRS for Direct File Pilot Success, 2025 Expansion, and Permanent Program Implementation

Washington D.C. – Today, the IRS announced they are continuing the Direct File program, after successfully benefitting more than 140,000 taxpayers across 12 states. After a survey of 11,000 users, over 90% prompted “excellence” as a response, speaking to the efficiency and accessibility of the program, compared to third-party tax preparation corporations notorious for predatory practices and poor quality preparation.

Throughout the Direct File pilot, Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online civil rights organization, has been a strong advocate for the program’s expansion and its critical role in combating inequities in the tax system. The organization has been at the forefront, informing hundreds of thousands of members and the public about the harms perpetuated by corporate tax filing services and promoting the benefits of Direct File. This initiative aligns with Color Of Change’s mission to protect Black communities from economic exploitation and to push for equitable solutions that spur economic mobility for Black families.

“This expansion of Direct File represents money and time saved in Black households.. Black communities have long been targets of deceptive practices by corporate tax giants, leading to higher costs and more barriers to tax filing. Direct File offers a free, trustworthy alternative that can help dismantle these barriers. It’s crucial that the IRS and Treasury continue to expand and improve this service, with dedicated outreach to Black communities beyond the upcoming tax season.” stated Brandon Tucker, Senior Director of Policy & Government Affairs at Color Of Change

Color Of Change also released a comprehensive report detailing how corporate tax filing giants have engaged in predatory practices specifically targeting Black communities. In addition, the organization has been in direct conversation with Treasury officials, emphasizing the necessity of targeted outreach to these communities. Collaboration with Direct File coalition partners has garnered nationwide support, culminating in a sign-on letter to the IRS and Treasury advocating for the continuation and expansion of the Direct File program into 2025.

As the IRS reviews the data and feedback from the pilot, Color Of Change remains committed to working alongside stakeholders to ensure the program meets the needs of Black taxpayers at all levels of income and wealth. The successful implementation and positive reception of Direct File is an example of what is possible for government services to communities with proper investment and underscores the need for its continuation and enhancement, paving the way for a more equitable and accessible tax filing system.
